ABOUT

Iodine is a trace element which is essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid, and the many key bodily functions that are governed by it, such as growth, neurological development and metabolism. [54] It balances Estrogen levels in the body, aids cognitive function, and reduces the need for insulin. [48] As it does not bio accumulate in the body, nor is it produced by the body, consumption is required through food or supplementation. [50]

Potassium Iodide has been used in areas of high radiation to block radioactive iodine from the thyroid, such as after the Chernobyl accident. [55] Iodine is a very useful addition to your detox as it chelates fluoride and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and aluminum, and fluoride, bromide and chlorine. Additionally iodine indirectly aids liver and kidney function, so is a worthy aid to your detoxification regime. [51]

Fluoride affects the absorption of iodine, so if your local water supply is treated with fluoride, make sure it is properly filtered or distilled, and eat plenty of kelp to boost your iodine levels. [48] Raw brassicas also affect iodine levels in the body, so if you are deficient, ensure all brassicas are cooked before eating. [52]

Most iodine is found in the ocean, and to a lesser degree in various regions it is in the soil. It leaches out of exposed earth, and many populations around the world are iodine deficient.

HOW TO USE

Iodized table salt

Iodized table salt is very refined and was created and promoted to treat iodine deficiency but only about 10% of the iodine is bio-available. It is much more beneficial to use natural mineral rich Celtic or Himalayan Salt in your cooking, and find other means to source your iodine as mentioned below. [53]

When supplementing, the RDA is:

  • Adults 150 mcg/d
  • Pregnant women 220 mcg/d
  • Breastfeeding women 290 mcg/d. [54]

You can use iodine as a mouthwash, gargle and nasal spray, which is a reportedly helpful anti-viral.

NOTES

Iodine and Selenium work in synergy so if you are deficient in iodine please also look at your selenium levels. [48]Brazil nuts are high in selenium so eating 3 of these with your iodine will help boost levels.

ALERT

  • Poisoning is rare and requires a very high dose, with symptoms including burning of the mouth, stomach and throat, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weak pulse, cyanosis and coma. [54]
  • For severely deficient individuals, initial dosing with iodine can cause hyperthyroidism – which is actually caused by deficiency! So start with a low dose especially if you have been chronically ill for a long time.
  • Pregnant and nursing mothers, newborn babies, people with Hashimoto’s, thyroiditis or hypothyroid should seek medical advice before use. [55]
  • Over use of iodine can lead to goiter, in which case reducing intake will rectify this in time.
  • Some medications can interact with Iodine so please check with your health professional before use.
