ABOUT
Yoga is an ancient system of spirituality and holistic health from India, from approximately 3000 years ago. One aspect of yoga, Hatha Yoga, includes physical forms called Asanas, breath work called Pranayama, and hand Mudras.
After introduction to America in the late 1800s is now popular in western health centers and gyms. [54] Growing research has shown that through balancing certain hormones and the central nervous system, yoga has beneficial health effects on body and mind. [54]
Kundalini Yoga is my favorite form, as different ‘kriyas’ or sequences have specific targets, such as detoxifying the kidneys, increasing circulation, flushing the lymphatic system or improving digestion. It combines postures and repetitive movements with breath and mantras to super charge its effects.
BENEFITS
Many forms of yoga include inversions, where your legs are higher than your torso. These poses can help greatly with circulation, help to drain and replenish blood in the extremities, bring fresh blood to your brain and flush the adrenal glands. According to yoga instructor Dr. Arielle Schwartz, the stretching and squeezing of muscles stimulates the lymph, massages the organs, clears the emotions and enhances breathing. [57]
Regular yoga practice helps to maintain anti-oxidant levels in the body under physical stress, including the master anti-oxidant L-Glutathione. [52][53] It also decreases adrenaline while increasing serotonin and immune function. [52] Yoga reduces stress and anxiety, which improves the autonomic nervous system, and is also beneficial for cancer patients. [54]
Yoga improves hormone levels in pregnant women, an increase in birth weight, a decrease in premature birth, and no negative effects. [54]
One study on patients with coronary artery disease showed that after a year, those who practiced yoga had significantly decreased incidents of angina in relation to the control group. Various studies have shown an increase in lung capacity and function after doing yoga regularly. [54]
A study from 2014 demonstrated that regular Pranayama for 3 months, (the controlled breathing aspect of yoga), greatly increased lung function in people with Pulmonary disease. [56]
INSTRUCTIONS
Be aware if your system currently has a lot of toxicity, you may feel a bit queasy doing some of these exercises. It does mean it’s working, but do go easy and drink plenty of water to help flush those toxins out.
There are yoga schools in almost every city these days, and there is a wonderful array of teachers available online. Below are a few of my favorite classes.
