Otherwise known as Holy Basil, this fragrant herbal shrub is known for its health benefits thanks to its historical use in traditional Ayurvedic, Siddha and folkloric medical systems in South East Asia. [95][97][98] For over 3000 years it has been used to treat ailments including hematological issues, asthma, parasites, inflammation and bronchitis. [98]

Recently Tulsi has been studied for its Anti-carcinogenic properties, found its high anti-oxidant levels and myriad chemical constituents were effective in preventing or reducing various types of cancer, partly by inducing cell die off and altering the gene expression. [96]

Compounds in Tulsi have also demonstrated protection of organs and tissues from sickness, tissue damage and DNA damage from radiation, industrial pollutants, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and heavy metals, and even from physical stresses such as overexertion, cold and excessive noise. [96][99] As well as protecting from damage, it aids the liver and processed of elimination to flush those toxins out of the body. [99]

Studies have also shown Tulsi to improve symptoms and survival rates of viral infection after 2 weeks of treatment with the leaf extract. [98]

HOW TO USE

Tulsi is best used when needed as a remedial medicine rather than taking regularly, so don’t overdo it! [94]

The most common way to take Tulsi is as a tea. It is easy to grow at home and you can pop a few fresh leaves in a cup of boiled water and steep for about 30 minutes. Similarly many health food shops and supermarkets supply a variety of Tulsi tea blends. Or for a quick fix you can try one of the supplements below.
