ABOUT

Sulfur is an abundant element which is part of many life processes and essential compounds. As an anti-inflammatory, sulfur springs around the world draw in flocks of bathers to their waters for relief from pain, allergies and other ailments. [144]

Sulfur is involved in the synthesis of master anti-oxidant Glutathione and N-Acetyl Cysteine making it an important part of the anti-oxidant system, as well as being a safe and effective detoxifier of heavy metals. [147]

Sulfur is considered by some to be the most important nutrient for detoxification. The Liver turns toxins to harmless compounds using sulfur based enzymes which allows them to exit the cell for excretion. [94]

Heavy metals have a particular affinity for sulfur containing peptides [102], which can help eliminate toxic heavy metals from the body such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. [146]

Sulfur is an important chelator as it can penetrate cell walls unlike other chelators. [146] Food containing sulfur is an effective medicine for protection from toxic metals. Garlic for example prevented kidney damage from cadmium and decreased oxidative damage from lead in rats in one study. [102]

Sulfur is also recommended as a protective agent against radiation. One study in rats found that Sulfur protected against lethal doses of gamma-radiation. [143] Studies in the 1960s to assess the level of protection offered by Sulfur demonstrated highly efficient protection in polymers exposed to radiation by colloidal sulfur and other sulfur containing compounds. [145]

HOW TO USE

Sulfur in its pure form is toxic so it needs to be sourced from foods or via supplements such as Methyl-Sulphonylmethane (MSM) [96]

MSM is a fantastic source of Sulfur. I take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon daily, away from food. It tastes quite bitter, so pop the crystals on the back of your tongue and wash down with water.

Sulfur only stays in body for about 12 hours so supplement 2 x daily if that suits you. [96]

Do not use before bed as it oxygenates the body so it may keep you awake! (Ask me how I know…) [96]

SOURCE

FOOD
Dinner plate with eggs and asparagus, both of which are high in sulfur

Vegetables including Asparagus, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cilantro, Cruciferous vegetables, Garlic, Kale, Onion and Radish

Protein foods such as Cheese, Eggs, Fish and Organic grass fed beef

SUPPLEMENTS

Please see the MSM listing for sources of Supplements

ALERT

  1. Do NOT take pure Sulfur internally as it is toxic.
  2. As Sulfur causes to body to detoxify, it may cause a Herxheimer reaction if too much is taken at once. If it is too uncomfortable, some psyllium husk, bentonite clay or charcoal could be taken after 30 minutes to clean up the newly released toxins
