ABOUT

Pile of star anise pods

Chinese Star Anise is the ripe, dried fruit of an evergreen tree from China and Japan, which was named in 1885 after the Japanese Shikimi flower by Johan Fredrik Eykman. [89]

It is used in both food and medicine, especially in Asia,[91] and is widely known for its anti-viral effects. It contains the compound Shikimic Acid which is used in natural and pharmaceutical viral medications, [91][93] and to inhibit spike protein damage. [88]

Thanks to its ability to normalize blood pressure, reduce arterial plaque and inflammation, it is promising as a preventative of heart disease and stroke. [92] Shikimic Acid also combines well with Quercetin, which increases the production of immune cells, and moderation of blood clotting. [93]

CONTAINS

Anethole, Flavonoids, Linalool, Shikimic acid, Vitamin C

HOW TO USE

Infusion
Cup of medicinal herbal tea

Put a couple of stars in a cup, fill with boiled water and steep 10 minutes. Strain and drink for a delicious and health promoting cuppa.

Food

I also add to water and allow to simmer a little before adding oats or quinoa for a tasty breakfast. It can be ground up to use as a spice, or add whole pods to your pot of grains or soup.

And for a bit of mystical fun, this little gem reportedly enhances your psychic abilities and can give you prophetic dreams. I’ll be putting some under my pillow tonight! [90]

ALERT

  • Although the Chinese Star Anise is safe to use, the Japanese Star Anise is toxic. Due to traces of it sometimes turning up in Chinese Star Anise, it is recommended to not give to children.
  • Ingestion of Japanese Star Anise can cause vomiting and seizures, so make sure you buy from a trusted source.
  • Studies on safe use during pregnancy and breastfeeding are lacking so it is advisable to avoid consuming it during this time.
