ABOUT

This striking (literally – it’s super spikey!) plant has green leaves streaked with white, and large pink to purple flowers. Also known as Holy Thistle or St Mary’s Thistle, it is native to Southern Europe and Asia and grows to about 5 feet high.

As a food source the leaves have been used in salads and the flowers roasted as a substitute for coffee. Its medicinal use, attributed to its main bioactive compound Silymarin, has been recorded across Europe since ancient times to treat snakebite, to protect liver and gallbladder, and heal kidney and spleen issues. [51][53][54]

Studies have stated it potentially protects the liver through various means including inhibiting toxins from penetrating membranes, and preventing fibrosis from occurring.  These toxins include drugs, alcohol and mushroom poisoning.  Importantly it not only protects the liver, but assists it to restore and regenerate itself, especially from issues such as fatty liver. [50][51][53][54]

Milk Thistle is recommended by The World Council for health and Dr Joseph Mercola to disable the spike protein and help detoxify from it, and Dr. Jordan Ruben to boost Glutathione levels and aid liver – which in turn degrades Graphene Oxide.  [55]

Contains

Silymarin, Potassium, Calcium, Vitamin B9, Copper

HOW TO USE

To use Milk Thistle extract, take 200mg 3 x daily.

The seed is the medicinal part, and if you are harvesting your own this is a bit of a process due to the prickly nature of the plant. It is recommended to cut off the flowering heads and dry in a paper bag, so you can then give it a good shake to separate the seeds. Separate the seeds and store in an airtight container. You can also use the leaves in salad, and the flowers can be roasted as a coffee substitute. [50][54]

The active constituents have been found to be poorly absorbed by the body of their own, however the addition of various compounds such as phosphatidylcholine have been found to increase absorption. It may be preferable therefore to opt for a supplement that has this addition.

If you would like to process the seeds yourself please see the recipe for Milk Thistle Concentrate in the Recipes section.

ALERT

  • Oral consumption of Milk Thistle may occasionally cause gastrointestinal problems, Headaches, Skin reactions, Neuropsychological issues, Impotence and Anaphylaxis. [51]
  • May cause low blood sugar in Diabetics. [53]
  • Insufficient evidence so far to confirm safe use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. [53]
  • If you would like to grow your own please be aware it is highly invasive and toxic to grazing livestock.
