ABOUT

Glass dish with crystals of Magnesium Chloride in it

Magnesium is a macro mineral which in its many forms is important for detoxification. It is a co-factor in over 300 enzymatic reactions including blood pressure, energy, bones, nerves, muscles, [74][77] and aids with sleep, pain and inflammation. [71] Magnesium is an anti-oxidant, and enhances other anti-oxidants in the body. [77]

Being a catalyst of enzymatic reactions, it accelerates other bodily processes. The liver pretty much organizes the entire body as far as toxicity goes, and adequate Magnesium ensures this will be effective. As the liver is responsible for cleaning the blood, Magnesium helps it break down toxins more quickly, reducing the reaction time, including metals such as aluminum, mercury and lead. In fact, not just the liver but all 7 pathways of elimination are up regulated by Magnesium. [71]

A 2004 human study demonstrated that regular supplementation of Magnesium decreased levels of lead and cadmium in hair analysis, [73] and earlier studies in rabbits had similar results. [75] Magnesium plays a protective role against exposure to Cadmium and can be used for prevention or therapy. [76] The cells themselves also require Magnesium to be able to remove toxins and heavy metals.

As the body cannot produce it, we need to take it in via food. Deficiency is common due to the degradation of our food supply and severe instances can affect the health of the muscles, the heart being one of the most important! [74]

HOW TO USE

Magnesium may be taken orally, but most practitioners I have heard of prefer to deliver it via the skin using magnesium oil or in baths. You can even use it as a deodorant!

The form I generally use for oil and baths is Magnesium Chloride, and occasionally I use Magnesium Citrate for digestion. Below are some of the more common forms and what their particular benefits are, but ALL forms are useful for detoxification.

FORMS OF MAGNESIUM
  • Magnesium Chloride – inorganic salt form with reasonable absorption. Can be made into Magnesium oil by mixing 1:1 with water and putting in a spray bottle, or added to your detox bath. [77]
  • Magnesium Citrate – combined with Citric acid. [77] Good for leg cramps, constipation, headaches, and absorbs readily. [72]
  • Magnesium Glycinate – combined with Glycine which is calming. Has good absorption, is calming, anti-inflammatory, not laxative. [72]
  • Magnesium Malate – combined with Malic acid. Highly absorbable. [77] Good for chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. [72]
  • Magnesium Orotate – great for athletes as penetrates deep into mitochondria, but is also very expensive. [72]
  • Magnesium Sulphate, more commonly known as Epsom Salts, can be used in the bath. It can also be taken occasionally internally as a laxative, but the Citrate is more highly advised for this use.[77]
  • Magnesium Taurate – combined with Taurine. [77] Good for blood sugars, blood pressure, [72] is very calming and relaxing. Very good absorption through cell membranes. [77]
  • Magnesium Threonate – this form is best for the brain and cognition, but is very pricey. [72]
AVOID
  • The forms to avoid are Magnesium Carbonate, Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Hydroxide. [72]
EXTERNAL

Mixed 50/50 with water it makes a great ‘oil’ that you can put into a spray bottle, with the additional of essential oils if you wish. Use about 10 sprays per day. Topical Magnesium can make the skin itch due to estrogen receptors, so it is advisable to use a different part of the body each day to minimize discomfort, such as on the forearm or thigh. Being a salt it can also dry the skin a little. This spray can also be used as a natural deodorant.

For deeper transdermal action you can add DMSO to your spray. There is no set dosage for this but I would combine one part of DMSO (50% solution with distilled water) with one part magnesium oil. As with all detoxifiers go slow, to minimize detox symptoms. You can also buy a premade DMSO / Magnesium spray via the link in the Source section below.

INTERNAL

The recommended dose of Magnesium is 320mg for females and 400mg for males. How this translates to actual powder depends on your brand and its percentage.

Vitamin B6 & Vitamin D assist with Magnesium absorption so take together if possible. [72]

To take advantage of the calming benefits of Magnesium take it at the end of the day.

ALERT

  • If you are using Magnesium Spray, please take this into account if you are also taking it internally, as this will add to your daily intake.
  • It is possible to overdose on Magnesium so go slow, follow the instructions on the packaging (different forms have different percentages and doses) and listen to your body.
  • If you are using supplements in an enema to do colonic implants, do NOT add any form of Magnesium as you will overdose on it.
  • If you are mixing Magnesium with DMSO, please go through safety instructions in DMSO listing before use.
