Fennel is well known as a digestive aid in countries such as India, where about 10 seeds are chewed as a breath freshener and to help digestion after a meal. It also cleans the blood so is a great addition to your detoxification regime. [38]

Its high anti-oxidant content makes Fennel an effective combatant of free radicals, and it is anti-inflammatory. [39] The compound Anethole in Fennel makes it effective protection against chemotherapy damage, and is Neuroprotective and Anti-thrombotic.

The seeds are nutrient rich and contain Shikimic Acid (SA – please see separate listing for this) which is a key ingredient in your personal health care currently. Shikimic Acid studies have shown it plays an important role in thinning the blood and reducing platelet aggregation related thrombosis. [41]

Many health practitioners have also claimed that Shikimic Acid neutralizes the spike proteins which have reportedly caused so many health issues in people who have been inoculated.

Anethole, Anti-oxidants, Calcium, Copper, Fiber, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Selenium, Shikimic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Zinc

HOW TO USE

Sow and Harvest

Plant from seed as the saplings have a big tap root making transplanting difficult. [37] To harvest, wait for the flowers to wilt, and for seeds to fatten, but don’t wait for them to brown. They should still be green and juicy when picked for medicinal use. You can then dry the seeds for later use, or make an ethanol tincture, glycerite or hydrosol. [36]

Food
Wooden spoon containing fennel seeds

1 tbsp. daily of seeds is ideal for health benefits. [38]

I make a tea with 1 tsp to a cup of water as one of my regular medicinal drinks. You can do a quick steep for 10-15 minutes, or allow it to steep a day or two, store in fridge and sip when desired.

Hydrosol

Place fresh seeds in water, soak overnight, distill in the water to desired strength. Due to the volatile oils not being present, this is safer than a tincture for infants and small children. You could also use this as a refreshing mouthwash. [37]

Supplements

Fennel also comes in oil, extract and supplement form.

ALERT

  • Fresh seeds can have rare allergic effects. [38]
  • The risk of stomach pain and nausea are higher in supplement form so if you are sensitive start gently. [38]
  • Safety of extracts in pregnant women is uncertain, so stick to the whole seeds. Due to activation of lactation, it is recommended to NOT USE fennel medicinally in the first 6 weeks of breastfeeding so lactation can develop on its own first.
  • Fennel MAY interfere with some medications especially estrogen, so check in with your health care provider.
