Dry brushing is the process of stimulating the skin and lymph by brushing with a dry body brush. It has many health benefits for the skin itself, increases circulation, detoxification and the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is a network of nodes, vessels, ducts and organs that is one of our key tools to remove toxins from the body. It has no pump unlike the vascular system, so it relies on muscle movement, massage, saunas and dry brushing to get it moving. This helps to flush out the many toxins your lymphatic system filters and increase your immunity. [4][5]

HOW TO USE

Use a soft bristle body brush, preferably of a natural material, and brush the naked skin in long gentle strokes. You can use a hand held brush or one with a long handle to reach your back. In small areas like the soles of the foot or over lymph node clusters I use short strokes or a circular motion to stimulate the area.

I start at the soles of the feet, work up the calves, focus on the lymph nodes behind the knees, work up the legs, focus on the lymph nodes at the groin. Then I start on hands up towards the arms then the shoulders, focusing on the lymph nodes in the armpits. Then I work on the stomach and less sensitive areas of the chest, always towards the heart. The pressure should be very gentle as the lymph is just under the skin, and also too much pressure can damage the skin itself.

Do this every morning in the shower before you turn the water on, so afterwards your shower can wash away all the dead skin you have just removed. Once you have towel dried use an organic moisturizer (I just use olive oil!) to rehydrate the skin.

From a Lymphatic drainage viewpoint the recommendation is to start at the torso, work the way down the arms and back up to the armpits, then at the top of the legs working down and back up again. [6] Personally I haven’t tried this version but the full details are on this post.

ALERT

  1. Avoid brushing moles, infections, lesions, burns or lumps under the skin.
  2. If you have overly sensitive skin, try a soft brush or even a wash cloth instead.

SOURCE

Most supermarkets and health care stores sell brushes for the skin. Just check the bristles as some are quite stiff and can irritate the skin.
