ABOUT

Taking a hot bath, also known as hydrotherapy, is a practice that has been used for centuries with many health benefits. The heat from immersion in a bath induces vasodilation which increases heart rate, blood flow, waste elimination and oxygen in the blood, while strengthening your immunity. [2][3]

Many toxins especially heavy metals can accumulate just under the skin, so heating up and sweating them out can help with your overall detoxification regime. Adding certain ingredients will aid in drawing out toxins, as well as replenishing minerals in the body through the skin.

HOW TO USE

Ensure the torso arms and legs are covered in water. Ideally for detoxification you want the water as hot as you can tolerate to induce sweat but still be comfortable. It shouldn’t burn!!! If you feel nauseous or lightheaded or your heart rate rises too much (some increase is ok but too much might cause issues if you have heart problems) it is probably too hot for you.

I soak for about 20 minutes but some sources say soaking for up to 40 minutes is good to allow minerals to be absorbed into the body.

Adding a handful of one or a few of the following substances will aid the detoxification process.

Dr Carrie Madej recommends the following, details in the recipes section. [1]

  • Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) 1-2 cups
  • Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate) 1-2 cups
  • Bentonite Clay 1/2 – 1 cup
  • Boric acid (Borax) Dr. Madej recommends 1 cup but I use max 2 tbsp.

You can also use any of the above and / or the following

  • High mineral salt such as Celtic or Himalayan (refined white salt can deplete  the body of minerals)
  • Magnesium Chloride Flakes
  • Essential oils 5-10 drops (Lavender, Eucalyptus and Tea tree and are helpful)

You will find some ideas for detoxifying bath mixtures in the Recipe Section under Skin Treatments.

It is often recommend to have a cold shower after a bath to refresh you and close the skin pores. Having a quick change from hot to cold water is also excellent for your immune system and general wellbeing. It sends the blood from the organs out to your limbs, thus flushing any stagnancy from your organs and bringing fresh blood back to them once the temperature normalizes again.

ALERT

  • Generally a maximum of 20 minutes is recommended as a longer bath may actually be depleting.
  • If you have heart issues it would be advisable to speak to your health professional about bathing in hot water to ensure you can do so safely, as it does increase heart rate.
  • If you wish to add essential oils to your bath, follow safety instructions and quantities on the label. Dilute up to 10 drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil before adding to your bath  to reduce irritation.
