ABOUT

Activated Charcoal is a highly porous carbon made usually from coconut husk or bamboo heated under very high pressure. This makes it expand into a network of pores like a sponge so it has a very large surface area of 950 – 2000m2/g. It is negatively charged which means it’s a magnet for positive elements such as heavy metals and toxins, [1] and harmful bacteria such as E. coli in the gut, but it’s not so attracted to normal bacterial flora. [5]

BENEFITS

It is used in water and environmental filtration, and for example has been shown to remove 90% of nickel from water, as well as cadmium, chromium and zinc, and it is even more effective when combined with silica. [4] In China it was successfully used to clean up a spill of Benzene in one city’s drinking water to prevent poisoning before any fatalities could occur. [2]

Activated Charcoal can adsorb many times its own weight making it useful for detoxification, thus it has been used in healing for over 3,000 years as a toxic binder. [2] Currently it’s commonly used in hospitals to decontaminate the gastrointestinal tract in case of food or chemical poisoning and drug overdose. [1]

It’s useful for general health, as taking it orally adsorbs accumulated toxins in the body, including environmental and industrial toxins such as herbicides, pesticides, plastic residues and chlorine. [2] It is also an effective cleanser of mercury and lead exposure, such as after getting amalgam fillings removed. [1] As it only removes toxins from the gastrointestinal tract, this is best done after long standing toxins have been mobilized, such as after a Niacin flush or at the end of a day of MMS.

It is NOT intended to be used every single day as it can lead to nutritional depletion, so limit use to your detoxification protocols.

HOW TO USE

First please don’t go emptying the contents of your fire place into your medicine cabinet! Use only food grade or pharmaceutical grade Charcoal internally. Do NOT use Charcoal from unknown sources.

EMERGENCIES

Medical outlines on the use of charcoal for emergency poisoning as a one off dose are 50g – 100g for adults, or 15g – 30g for children for food or drug poisoning. [6]

FOOD POISONING

If you have mild food poisoning you can try taking up to 1 tbsp. of powder (or tablets as directed) in a full glass water immediately. (This can make some people especially children vomit which is normal)

GENERAL DETOXIFICATION

For a general detox, limit daily Charcoal use to 2 or 3 weeks as it can interfere with your nutrition over extended periods of time. I start with ¼ tbsp. per dose and work up to 1 tbsp. in water.

MOLD

For mold detoxification the recommended dose is 1 tbsp. 3 x per day. Drink 2-3 X your usual water during this time or you will get constipated. [1]

POST FLUSH

If I am using it as part of a cleanse I use 1 tbsp. 1 hr. after a Niacin flush or 1 hr. after my last dose of daily MMS.

I tend to mix it with other binders to catch a wider variety of toxins. Please see the Mud Mix listing in Recipes – Binders for further details.

TOPICAL

As Activated Charcoal draws toxins into it I have also found it incredibly useful combined with other ingredients as a paste for insect bites, and as a body scrub. Homemade toothpaste with charcoal is ideal for this! Please see the Recipes – Skin Treatments section for more information.

ALERT

  • Do NOT use in the case of ingested corrosives or caustics. [6]
  • Be gentle when mixing charcoal with water to avoid breathing in the powder as it irritates the lungs. [6]
  • Take at least 90 minutes AWAY from food and supplements, as it may absorb nutrition.
  • For daily use please limit it to 2 or 3 weeks at a time or it can lead to nutritional deficiencies.
  • Charcoal is a binder and it constipates, so I like to combine it with psyllium husks to stop it clogging my belly.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of filtered water with it or it can lead to dehydration.
  • Don’t freak out if your poo goes black while using charcoal – perfectly normal J
